Plant-Based Concentrated Laundry Detergent Recipe

This recipe will guide you in making a simple and effective plant-based concentrated laundry detergent that is gentle on your clothes. You'll need some common household ingredients and a few pieces of equipment. Let's get started!

Ingredients:

1 cup of soap nuts or soap nut pieces (Soap nuts are natural berries containing saponin, a natural soap-producing agent.)
2 cups of water
1 tablespoon of washing soda (sodium carbonate)
10-15 drops of essential oil (optional, for a pleasant scent)

Equipment Needed:

Saucepan
Wooden spoon or spatula
Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
Empty detergent bottle or jar with a lid

Instructions:

Prepare the Soap Nut Extract:

In a saucepan, combine 2 cups of water and 1 cup of soap nuts or soap nut pieces.
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.
Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 20-30 minutes. This process will release the natural saponin from the soap nuts, creating a soapy liquid.

Strain the Soap Nut Extract:

Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the liquid to cool slightly.
Place a fine mesh strainer or a piece of cheesecloth over a bowl or another saucepan.
Carefully pour the soap nut extract through the strainer or cheesecloth to separate the liquid from the soap nut pieces. Squeeze or press the soap nuts to extract as much liquid as possible.

Add Washing Soda:

Return the soap nut liquid to the saucepan and place it back on low heat.
Stir in 1 tablespoon of washing soda until it dissolves completely. Washing soda enhances the cleaning power of the detergent.

Add Essential Oil (Optional):

If you prefer scented laundry detergent, now is the time to add 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil to the mixture. Popular choices include lavender, lemon, or eucalyptus.

Concentrate the Detergent:

Continue to heat the mixture on low for an additional 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. This helps concentrate the detergent by evaporating excess water.

Cool and Store:

Allow the concentrated detergent to cool down completely.
Carefully transfer the detergent into an empty detergent bottle or a jar with a lid. Make sure the container is clean and dry before adding the detergent.

How to Use:

For standard loads, use 1-2 tablespoons of the concentrated detergent.
For heavily soiled loads or larger machines, you can use 3 tablespoons.

Note: Always shake the container before use, as the detergent may separate over time. This homemade plant-based concentrated laundry detergent is suitable for regular and high-efficiency washing machines and works well for most laundry needs. Enjoy clean and fresh laundry while knowing you are using an eco-friendly and natural alternative!
